Chivas USA has strengthened its defense with has the signing of longtime Mexican national team captain Claudio Suarez. Suarez is considered by many to be the greatest central defender in the history of Mexican soccer.
Suarez, 37, has appeared for his country on 173 occasions, the second most of any player in history. He was part of Mexico's 1994 and 1998 World Cup squads and is expected to be part of his country's 2006 team. He missed the 2002 World Cup due to an injury.
"Chivas USA is proud to sign yet another legendary Mexican national team player and World Cup veteran," said Chivas USA General Manager Whit Haskel. "Claudio is a class act, a true leader, and a great example to our young players."
A product of the youth system of Mexico City club Pumas UNAM, Suárez played professionally for Chivas USA's sister team, Club Deportivo Guadalajara, from 1996-2000, as well as fellow Mexican First Division clubs Pumas UNAM (1989-1996) and Tigres UANL (2000-2005).
"I'm very proud to join Chivas USA," Suarez said. "Chivas USA is a new project, an exciting project, and we look forward to making our own history here in the United States."
Suarez has been practicing with Chivas USA since training began in February and he will be available for the team's opener with Real Salt Lake.
