D.C. United forward Alecko Eskandarian has been fined by the Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee for his goal celebration in last weekend's game against New York Red Bulls.
"The MLS Disciplinary Committee has fined D.C. United forward Alecko Eskandarian $250 for inappropriate conduct in the 42nd minute of United's game against the New York Red Bulls on April 22," the league said in a statement.
After scoring, Eskandarian ran over to the D.C. United bench, grabbed a can of Red Bull, took a sip, and spit out the drink in disgust.
Many were wondering how the league would react to the display, since Red Bull has just recently joined the league and has reportedly invested $100 million.
"By no means was that trying to offend anyone," Eskandarian said. "It was just something funny for the guys to laugh at in the locker room. They are our rivals, and I apologize if I offended anyone, but it should not have. It was just a little joke amongst the team."
When asked if the celebration was premeditated, the New Jersey native had this response. "I've had a history of concussions, so I can't really remember." Eskandarian said.
Eskandarian sat out most of last season due to post-concussion syndrome.
He has gotten off to a fast start this season, scoring three times, all of them coming against the Red Bulls. He was also named MLS Player of the Week for his two goal performance on April 22.
